How to edit metadata

    Open the PDF

    Drop a PDF onto the page or click to choose it. The metadata fields appear once the file is loaded.

    Fill in the fields you want

    Type into Title, Author, Subject, Keywords (comma separated), Creator or Producer. Fields you leave empty stay unchanged.

    Click Edit metadata to write the new properties into the document.

    Click Download, then open the file's Document Properties in your PDF reader to confirm the new values.

Why edit PDF document properties

Every PDF carries a set of built-in properties. They are invisible on the page, yet they shape how the file is presented. A browser tab shows the Title. A library or document management system sorts by Author and Subject. Desktop search indexes the Keywords. When these fields are wrong, blank or leftover from a template, the file looks unfinished.

People change PDF metadata for reasons like these:

  • Publishing on a website. A clean Title makes a downloadable guide or whitepaper look professional when opened in a browser.
  • Fixing template leftovers. Reports exported from a shared template often inherit someone else's name or an old project title.
  • Organizing archives. Consistent Author, Subject and Keywords make a folder of PDFs far easier to search and sort.
  • Crediting the right person. Freelancers and agencies can set the client or their own studio as Author before delivering files.
  • Ebooks and course materials. Readers and library apps display the Title and Author on their shelves.

Available fields

The editor exposes the six standard fields found in PDF document information:

  • Title is the document's display name.
  • Author is the person or organization responsible for the content.
  • Subject is a short description of what the document covers.
  • Keywords holds search terms, entered as a comma-separated list.
  • Creator is the application in which the original content was made.
  • Producer is the tool that produced the PDF file.

Only the fields you type into are changed. Everything else, including the pages themselves, stays as it was.

Editing properties does not require a server, so none is used. The document is opened by code running on your own computer or phone, the new values are written in memory, and the updated file comes straight back as a download. We do not receive a copy at any point. That also means you can load the page once and continue working with no connection. It is free, with no account and no sign-up.

Tips and honest limitations

  • Clearing values. Blank fields are skipped rather than erased. For a fully fresh set of properties, run Remove metadata first and then edit.
  • XMP metadata. This tool updates the classic document information fields. Some apps prefer a separate XMP record when one exists. Removing metadata first avoids any mismatch between the two.
  • Dates. Creation and modification dates are not editable here.
  • File size. The ceiling is 200 MB per PDF. How smoothly a very large file opens comes down to the memory in your computer or phone.
  • Encryption. Protected PDFs ask for their password, and the edited copy is saved without encryption.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the title of a PDF?

Open the file here, type the new name in the Title field and click Edit metadata. The title is what many browsers and PDF readers show in the tab or window bar, instead of the file name.

Why does my PDF show the wrong title in the browser tab?

Browsers usually display the Title property stored inside the PDF, not the file name. If the document was exported from a template, that property may still say something like Untitled or an old project name. Setting a new Title fixes it.

Do PDF keywords help with SEO?

Search engines mainly look at the text of the document itself. A clear Title and Subject can still help, because some search results and viewers display them. Keywords are useful for document management systems and desktop search.

How do I enter several keywords?

Type them in the Keywords field separated by commas, for example: invoice, 2026, acme. Each one is stored as a separate keyword.

Can I clear a field completely?

Empty fields are treated as no change, so this tool cannot blank out an existing value. To wipe all properties, run Remove metadata first, then come back and set only the fields you want.

What are the Creator and Producer fields?

Creator usually names the app the document was originally written in, such as a word processor. Producer names the software that generated the PDF. You can overwrite both with any text you like.

Is the document uploaded when I edit its properties?

No. The change is made in your browser on your own device. Your PDF is never transmitted, and the tool works offline once the page is open.
