Why add a text watermark to a PDF

A watermark tells every reader what a document is before they read a single line. It is a simple way to label status, ownership or sensitivity, and it travels with the file wherever it goes.

Common situations where people reach for a PDF watermark:

• Drafts under review. Stamp DRAFT across a contract or report so nobody mistakes it for the signed final.
• Confidential material. Mark board papers, HR files or financial statements as CONFIDENTIAL before they circulate.
• Client deliverables. Put a client or project name on proofs, mockups and quotes so they are harder to pass off elsewhere.
• Sample copies. Label a preview edition of an ebook, course handout or price list as SAMPLE.
• Tracking copies. Add a recipient's name to each copy you send, which discourages casual forwarding.

Tips for a watermark that works

Centered or tiled. A single centered stamp is clean and readable. Choose it for status labels like DRAFT. A tiled pattern covers the whole page in offset rows. It is harder to crop out, which makes it the better pick for proofs and anything you worry about being screenshotted.

Keep it faint. Values between 15% and 30% on the Opacity slider usually strike the right balance. The mark stays obvious, yet the page underneath remains comfortable to read.

Use the angle. The default of -45 degrees runs the text diagonally from lower left to upper right. Set the Angle slider to 0 for a horizontal banner, or to any value between -90 and 90 degrees.

Size to the page. The Size slider goes from 12 pt to 120 pt. Short words like DRAFT look good large. Longer phrases need a smaller size so they fit across the page when centered.

Choose a neutral color. Gray or a muted brand color is easier on the eyes than pure black or bright red, especially when printed.

Your document stays on your computer

Watermarking happens inside your browser tab. The PDF is read into local memory, the text is drawn onto each page by code running on your own machine, and the finished file is handed straight back to you. There is no upload step and no copy on a remote server. That matters most for the kind of files people usually watermark, which tend to be private by nature. After the page has loaded once, you can even switch off your connection and keep working.

The tool is free and needs no account. Files up to 200 MB are accepted, and how fast a large document processes depends on your device.

Honest limitations

• Text only. Image and logo watermarks are not supported.
• The same mark goes on every page. You cannot yet choose a page range or a different text per page.
• A watermark is a deterrent, not a lock. A determined person with editing software may be able to remove or cover it.
• Characters beyond Latin, Cyrillic and Greek may not display correctly.
